Robbins Library Multicultural Film Festival (Oct. 1-3, 2004) Smoke Signals (PG-13, 89 min) Time: Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 (7pm) Location: Robbins Library Community Room **Native American film about two Coeur d'Alene Indians travelling from their reservation in Idaho to Phoenix, and discovering some truths about themselves along the way. When she loses her money her mother gave her, her trip becomes an odyssey in which she meets an array of characters both greedy and kind. A businessman navigates relationships with his aging father and mentally disabled brother, who runs a traditional bathhouse in the country. This is also the title of the town wide book read (novel by Whiti Ihimaera), which will be discussed at the Robbins Library on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:30pm. Arlington Book Discussion of Whale Rider
(Oct. 13, 2004) Time: Friday, Oct. 13, 2004 (7:30pm) Location: Robbins Library Community Room Arlington is reading Whale Rider by Witi Tame Ihimaera. This book is appropriate for nearly all ages from upper elientary to adult; short inlength and easy to read but with depth in the issues it explores. Summary: As her beloved grandfather, chief of the Maori tribe in Whangara, New Zealand, struggles to lead in difficult times and to find a male successor, young Kahu is developed a mysterious relationship with whales, particularly the ancient bull whale whose legendary rider was their ancestor. Note: Robbins and Fox Libraries have multiple copies of Whale Rider. We can also borrow the title from other libraries as needed. |
